At a time when Islamaphobic rhetoric is alarmingly high in America, I remember that languages of hate breed violence, and unfettered nationalism and xenophobia lead to the dissolution of hard won (if imperfect) democracy and liberties.
For the past 29 months I have lived in Muslim communities in Tanzania. I have been nursed like a child, treated as a guest, and respected as an individual. I have lived with people who astounded me with their piety, introspection, and compassion, people who habitually used religion to dismiss rational thought and excuse moral lapses, and people who live their lives navigating a culture without faith. Religion does not preclude the choices a person makes and the life they shape for themselves. Faith is the human condition and faith is choice.
Fear is the tool that fascists, autocrats, and genocidaires use to muzzle opposition and commit atrocities. Don't give in to fear and speak up in the face of hate. Don't allow yourself to think that "it can't happen here" and that our society is immune to radicalism; these lapses have lead to the greatest tragedies our species has committed upon itself. Humanity is shaped by ideas; a culture of fear and hatred breeds a society of oppression.
In the face of fear, be brave. In the face of hate, love. In the face of uncertainty, open yourself. In the face of injustice, act... and have faith.
